I am unable to open an Excel file by double clicking on it. Excel starts but no spreadsheet, instead I have to do File/Open to load the file, any ideas?

I've had this problem before as well, open Excel, start a new spreadsheet then select the Options menu, and in the general tab uncheck the item which says 'ignore other applications'. Close down Excel then try, it worked for me.
